Talented, a deserved winner, a deserved champion, all around seemingly nice guy. In 2018, he seemingly caught everyone's eye in GP3, which would be the last season before becoming Formula 3. In 2017, he joined ART Grand Prix, as one if their drivers, and helped them to the team title that year. He was clearly talented, taking four podiums throughout the year and claiming fourth in the championship.
But 2018, was to be his year. For the last time GP3 would run, and he would shine. Taking eleven podiums in the eighteen races, two wins and four poles. In the feature race at Sochi, the final one of the season. He was crowned the champion.
Rightly so, he headed to Formula 2. Now everyone knew his name, and he became a star from the first race. In the pink Arden, which stands out from everyone when racing because of the colour, like Hubert did too. His first feature race in the formula 2 car, he took fourth, it does not happen often that you see this, and that is how we all knew he was talented and something special.
His win in Monaco, that was something to talk about. It's hard to win in Monaco, I may not have driven it, and I am guessing you have not either. But his win in that sprint race marked him as one to watch, one to be a contender for the championship in the right car.
Anthonie's home win, had people talking. He started on pole in the sprint race, and it meant everything to him. He was so dominate and a champion's drive.
One thing I will always remember about him is his glasses. After the race he would but them on, you'd see him stood on the podium with them on, in interviews with them on, so he was so recognisable to us all.
It's hard, for any of us to talk about this. I never met Anthoine, a lot of us didn't, yet a few of us did too but every death within motorsport is hard. I know it silly to think, but I never thought I would see it again, I thought the progression was that amazing, it would end in 2014. But, Lewis Hamilton summed it up perfectly "all these drivers put their lives on the line when they hit the track"
He was 22, and so talented, and no doubt will be in all our mind every race, whether it is F3, F2 or F1, he will be someone we think of.
Before I finish the post, his mum and his brother may be two of the bravest people, and I cannot help but mention them. As not even twenty four hours later, they stood there on that track with his helmet and I do not think I have ever thought two people braver.
To everyone at the F1 race, on lap nineteen that was magical, and thank you. It was only fitting for Charles Leclerc to win the race.
It is hard when this happens but cherish Anthonie at his best, which was the majority of his race. I hope everyone is doing okay, and Anthonie Hubert will not be a name anyone in motorsport forgets any time soon
